The muted colours are further enhanced by the horizontal grain effect of the wood which gives almost a craquelure look to the surface
The top right of the panel is flaking away revealing the wood underneath
I think panel paintings work really well without a frame to allow the unusual medium to shine through. But this would also be striking framed in a deep gilt or dark wood frame
