This French display cushion is covered in the most beautiful royal blue velvet
These cushions are increasingly hard to find. They are solid pieces filled with sawdust and were used variously for carrying the ring at a wedding and for the bride to display her wedding tiara after the big day.
Dating from the late 1800s, they often sat underneath a glass dome to protect them ("coussin de mariee" or "globe de mariee"). The cushion is edged with metallic braid with metalled tassels to each corner.
Condition: The velvet is very faded and worn in large parts. There are tears to the top and a large tear underneath which has been patched up with blue satin and glass-head pins.
Size: 21cm x 21cm x 14cm approx.
